    The real question may be whether there were situations in which belt-feds could have and should have been available but were not.  One incident that comes to mind is the SLA shootout in which the LAPD were taking fire from, among other things, a BAR and were mostly armed with handguns and shotguns with a few ARs.  Possibly another is the Philadelphia MOVE bombing.  If the PD had superior firepower maybe they wouldn't have felt compelled to blow up the entire block.

    As always, I'd guess they are mostly useful in LE situations where they end up not actually being fired (similar to most LE firearm use).

    A display of overwhelming LE power (and willingness to escalate & employ it) is useful in some circumstances.

    For example, the Texas State Patrol likely doesn't receive many potshots from the Mexican side of the boarder cruising

    along the Rio Grande in their gunboats (as pictured above) vs. what they would encounter cruising along in a rubber Zodiac....

    An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

  2. You can file a 5320.20 before F4 is approved.

    Also, an acquaintance of mine was told by an examiner an approved F4 can be used to deliver across state lines - this was when the examiner was rejecting a 5320.20 filed after he filed it after the F4 was already approved.

    This was ~10yrs ago, and they have been know to change their minds So perhaps getting something is writing is a good idea if you don’t pre-file the 5320.20.

  3. Re: the “odd/mystery” original transfer long ago

    My guess is that the original F4 from the FFL/SOT was done on a F4 because the MG was held by him personally rather than in the inventory of the FFL (that would have allowed the item to transfer on a F3)…. It is also possible the original FFL/SOT didn’t know he could save 200 by using a F3 rather than a F4….  Also possible it was transferred by FFL after his sot had expired.

    @pstidan provided good advise above

    Send out on F3 and no changes using info on the F4.

  4. Colt 1927 might make an interesting investment as well.  Significantly more rare than a Colt 21 (essentially the same gun).

    Very good advise above wrt reduced complexity & reliability of the M1/M1A1.  But in the end these are just toys, if you want a 1921/1928 get what <<you>> think is cool looking and fun!

  5. Drum -> 1921 or 1928 config models rather than M1 or M1A1 (these 2 only take sticks)

    investment gun - 1921 as nice as you can find

    shooting gun - WH 1928 that has visited PK (Diamond K) and rebuilt with a nos parts kit

    Personally, I’m not a big fan of Thompsons in general, but for a shooter I’d not bother with the drums and open yourself up to military M1/M1A1s as well

    Best of lu k in your search,
