Savage M1A1 Thompson

We have the following transferable Savage manufactured M1A1 Thompson Submachine Gun, serial number 550734 available for sale. Savage Arms likely manufactured this Thompson in early 1943, and they did so under contract for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation in Bridgeport, CT. M1 and M1A1 Thompsons manufactured during WWII were produced by either Savage, or Auto-Ordnance in Bridgeport, CT, and all were marked with the AOC Bridgeport address.
This weapon has been refinished through an arsenal rebuild at some point in its service, however it is not marked as such, but the work is represented by the mismatched lower frame serial number that was marked through with X’s. Maintaining matching receiver and lower frame serial number were not required during arsenal rebuilds. At some point during manufacture, a directive was given to discontinue lower frame serial numbers, as they were no longer considered necessary, and if they were mismatched, it sometimes caused confusion during record keeping tasks. No official arsenal rebuild marks are visible on any of the weapon’s surfaces, and the barrel has not been prick-punched to indicate a barrel replacement, so the barrel is possibly original to manufacture. It features the later style Lyman sight with protective ears, pin-style fire control levers, as well as the later style buttstock featuring a reinforcing crossbolt. All the wood on this M1A1 is very nice. The receiver has the Auto-Ordnance acceptance stamp of "GEG" for George E. Goll. The "GEG" stamp appears twice; once on the receiver nose, and once above the magazine well. George E. Goll was the longest serving employee of Auto-Ordnance, beginning as General Thompson's chauffeur, and he ended up becoming the President of the Auto-Ordnance Division of Maguire Industries during WWII. It also has an "FJA" inspector stamp, indicating it was inspected under the supervision of Army Inspector of Ordnance Frank J. Atwood of the Rochester Ordnance District during WWII. Such an inspector stamp is the easiest way to quickly identify a Savage M1, since they were not marked with “S” prefixes like the earlier M1928A1 models, and are extremely similar to the M1A1’s manufactured by Auto-Ordnance in Bridgeport, CT.
This M1 Thompson is also equipped with a foregrip reinforcing band, which was installed as a result of War Department Modification Work Order A32-W4, on 24 August 1944. The reinforcing band helped to relieve stress on the riveted grip mount when the weapon was carried by a sling. It is also marked “U.S. PROPERTY” on the top rear of the receiver, and that marking was made in two rows, which was also characteristic of Savage manufacture.
This is a great collector, or “shooter” M1A1 Thompson, in very nice overall condition. It’s a fine looking example of an M1A1 Thompson that was manufactured at a time when the outcome of WWII was still very uncertain.
