Savage, 1928, Early Thompson, 1941

This is a fairly early Savage manufactured Thompson, Model of 1928, serial number S-93917. When Russell Maguire acquired Auto-Ordnance in 1939, just before war broke out in Europe, he did not have a manufacturing facility, and contracted with Savage Arms in 1940 to produce Thompson Submachine Guns like this one. This Thompson was likely produced during the first half of 1941, and is between the 78,000th and 79,000th Savage Thompson produced. It has honest wear from use and disassembly, and the finish appears original. It features a Cutts Compensator, finned barrel, and the early, flat style ejector like its Colt manufactured predecessors. It does not have any military acceptance markings, and is what collectors refer to as a Commercial Savage Thompson. Its original purchaser was likely a police department. This Thompson displays the Auto-Ordnance Bridgeport, CT address, which was transitioned from the original New York addresses on Savage Thompsons with serial numbers about 13,000 serial numbers lower than this example. The receiver is the 3rd Savage type, as referenced in Tom Davis excellent book, Great Britain - The Tommy Gun Story. On the right side of the receiver, it has the Bridgeport address to the left, and the patent numbers to the right hand side. Savage Thompsons are sought after collectors items, and this is a very nice example to add to your collection.
