Colt 1911 "tool room prototype" from Dr. Robert Azar collection

Colt 1911 "tool room prototype", serial number C108620, 45 ACP caliber.

This pistol is from the collection of Dr. Robert Azar, and supposedly was a "Colt tool room prototype"

There are a number of unique and odd things done to this pistol:

 

Metal (likley zinc or aluminum) grips

The slide serrations extend forward of their normal location, and into the rollmarks on the left side of the slide. There is no noticeable change in the serrations, they are consistent the entire length of the slide. 

A hole in the left side safety and into the frame

It has " S  M P 343 " stamped into the front strap, with 343 obviously being the last three digits of the serial number. 

The magazine has witness holes drilled into it on the left side and the rear.

 

The Colt Archive letter says this was shipped to Gaston Williams and Wigmore in New York, New York on March 22, 1919 as part of a 100 gun shipment.

My personal guess is these changes were either requested by a specific customer, or a skilled gunsmith of the era modified the gun for a customer.

If it was a Colt tool room prototype, I have no explanation as to why it would either have left the factory like this, or would have come back to the factory later for modification.  The truth is likely lost to history. 

Regardless, it is a neat piece of history. 

 

The pistol includes the handgun with original magazine, and a Colt Archive letter.
