Rodney's Distributors
Mil-Spec Buffer Tube (Standard): Outer diameter is 1.146" – 1.148". Commercial Buffer Tube: Outer diameter is 1.168" – 1.17".

Rodney's Distributors
A standard AR-15 carbine buffer has an outside diameter of approximately 0.99 to 1.0 inches (roughly 25 mm), designed to move freely inside both MIL-spec and commercial receiver extensions. While weights vary (3.0–5.4+ oz), the diameter remains consistent to ensure proper cycling within the tube. Key Considerations for Buffer Diameter: Buffer Diameter: The buffer body is 1-inch in diameter, which is intentionally smaller than the inner diameter of the buffer tube (which is 1.148" for Mil-spec or 1.168" for commercial) to prevent binding. Ryanjj
Hmmmmmm……. I just got this from another member. Maybe his caliper is off as your saying it has a 1” diameter? Or are you referring to the “Step up” section.
