Removing NFA

Legally nothing. But to actually have it noted in the nfatr just send the atf a signed memo stating that the firearm is no longer configured as an SBR. Eventually they'll send you a letter confirming such

Here is my experience.... YMMV ..... Ted

They actually have a format they want you to follow in the letter:

I incorrectly submitted an "incomplete" request and received a reply to include additional info:

From the reply, I created a template for future need.

I sent mine by mail, as indicated below:

RE: Removal of Short Barrel Rifle (SBR) from NFRTR.

Dear Sir / Ma’am,

Please remove the following Short Barrel Rifle (SBR) from the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR).

The firearm is no longer configured as an SBR. The firearm has been returned to the original non-NFA configuration. (pistol or rifle with a 16"+ barrel)

Serial Number:

Model:

Caliber:

NFA Approval Date:

I respectfully request confirmation be sent via mail, or to the address or E-mail listed provided.

Respectfully submitted,

SIG & DATE (Must be SIGNED with wet signature & date)....probably needs to match the original approved F1 or F4

E-mail

About 6 months later they will send you a copy of your letter with an approval embedded in the letter.

If you need to proceed quicker (i.e. pending sale, recommend you keep a copy of letter and the mail receipt....even better the return receipt card).

Like I said, this worked for me. YMMV, Ted

I’ve used a similar format like posted above.  Eventually I got confirmation letters returned up to several months later.  I keep the confirmation with a copy that I originally sent and the form that was cancelled.  Over cautious?  Perhaps.  But if they execute my wife and burn down our compound, I need everything I can get to sue them and win. ;)
