Opinion on values of some pre-sample guns

Recommended Posts

I'm helping the family of a customer/friend. He died unexpectedly (56 y/o). Great collection of title 1 guns too. Some decent transferrables and fortunate for them 5 guns that got reclassified from pre-sample to transferrable. As of now they are keeping everything that is non-NFA and the transferrables as there are family that want them. We have taken in the pre-samples left over. Some are items I've just not seen enough of to know a current value. I'd like to give them a guesstimate range before they soon all head to market.

2 full size Uzi's that appear new in box. 1 is parkerized and one has the black finish.

1 mini Uzi that appears new in box

2 USGI M2 carbines one is in a repro M1A1 stock.

Beretta AR-70

Valmet M78 .308

Chinese AK47 Type 56 underfolder (66 triangle mark for China state run factory) DLO import marked.

Much appreciate thoughts on selling values for them.

Alan

Honestly, it's a bit tough to price pre-samples that didn't transition to transferable right now, as there's not that many left.
I'd use past selling prices as a guide on value. The Beretta and the UZIs have been regulars on the boards here, so it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.
The Valmet is a hard sell, not exactly a lot of demand for them.
The AK will be the big money draw of the lot. Even as a sample, there's a high demand for AKs.

What you say seems true. I normally think 50% of transferable but it is like voodoo not science on some of these. Sienna sold a sample G1 for like $12,999 on GB and it was a beautiful gun. What are your thoughts on a 50% transferable price rule of thumb?

I would love one but the mags are hard to find. A hard sell,... I certainly understand that but would still like one. I would like a lot of guns though.

I've never used a "50% of transferable prices" as a guide to pre-samples.

Most pre-samples did not have any transferable counterparts, and after the re-classification of a lot of pre-samples last year, the market is going through a period of re-stabilization so it's basically the "wild west" for prices now.

Some common (pre-2024) pre-samples were:
UZIs, both full size and mini
MP5 and MP5SD
HK33 and HK53
Beretta PM12s
Walther MPK/MPL
FAL (G1 and StG58)

None of these were (before 2024) available as trasnferables except a few factory full sized UZIs
I heard a rumor that a couple of MP5s were on the registry as transferable, pre-1968 imports, but I never saw proof that they existed.
Most of these models didn't hit the states until well after 1968. And some, like the PM12s weren't even manufactured before 1968.
So it would be impossible to price them based off 50% of their transferable counterparts, because there weren't any transferable ones.
As for the few transferable factory IMI UZIs, they were held onto by collectors and I haven't seen one for sale in at least a decade.
And you couldn't use conversions (like Vector or IMI model A and B UZIs, or HK sears) as benchmarks for pricing because they aren't in the same league as factory made SMGs.

Other pre-samples that did exist as transferables:
M3/M3A1 grease guns
Thompsons
M2 carbines
Stens
Brens
BARs

These would fall roughly into the "50% of transferable" category, but the true selling prices were more like 40% of transferable.

Truly the best price guide is this board. Because the rules insist on leaving your ad intact (including the prices), this board has become the best resource for pricing there is. All you have to do is search for the model you are looking for and you get a instant reference point for prices that sell and prices that are too high and don't sell.
I never use auctions (like Morphys or RIA) as a price guide. A lot of the prices they get for stuff is way higher than true market value, no doubt because of the exposure and the excitement of bidding that makes people go crazy.

GB can be a decent guide, but only on auctions that start low and actually sell, not "BIN" prices.

I agree 100%!!! With one exception. Some auctions on GB super exceed reality on pricing. Some “known” sellers  imho have some shill bidders that bid things up and get regular “Joes” caught up in a bidding FRENZY! Next thing you know it’s a 1/3rd more than anything listed on Sturm. Wish there was a way to eliminate that bs on GB. YMMv. Imho
