Colt Thompson Serial # 4555

Offered for sale is an Auto-Ordnance Model of 1921 (AC) Thompson Submachine Gun, serial number 4555, which was manufactured by Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company for Auto-Ordnance Corporation , presumably between August and September 1921.  This is one of the original 15,000 Colt Thompsons, which range in serial number from 41 to 15040.

Colt Thompsons were originally manufactured in 1921A configuration, without a compensator, and were marked “Model of 1921.”  This one is marked in that manner, and had the option of a Cutts Compensator added, which makes it a “1921AC.”

This particular Thompson does not have a documented history listed in the late Gordon Herigstad’s book, “Colt Thompson Serial Numbers,” and is one of many for which original ownership records are unavailable.

This Colt Thompson has been refinished, and the receiver has a plum color, while the lower frame has an old reblue that is of slightly different color than the receiver.  The buttstock is a non-original, and of WWII manufacture, and has a small hairline crack visible at the nose.  The vertical foregrip is also of WWII vintage.  There is light rust freckling present on the wrist around the top back of the pistol grip.  The buttplate has many dings in the metal, showing that it saw honest use in its day, having probably served in a police department.  The barrel is reproduction, having 27 fins, with the grip mount on the 20th fin.  The compensator and front sight are of West Hurley manufacture.  This Thompson features patent dates, as well as a “JHB” inspector marking on the right side of the receiver to indicate inspection for Auto-Ordnance by Chief Inspector John H. Barrett.
The weapon has an original 1921 actuator, and comes with a non-original spare. It has original Colt internals, except for the Blish lock, which is of WWII AOC manufacture.

This would make a great “shooter” Colt Thompson for a new collector, or for a collector who wants to have a Colt they can shoot to preserve another Colt of higher condition.
