Not sure if there was then, other than utilizing abundant spare parts and beefing up the barrel for more sustained fire? Heavy match grade barrels and modified gas systems have had a good amount of R+D thrown at them from many sources in the last 20 years as well as huge reductions in recoil and upgraded ergonomics. In all this you get a quiet match grade day/night sniper system with full auto capability in a package the same size as an M16 that can quietly reach out at 1/2 MOA or better with off the shelf federal ammo.
