Commercial Level Pricing on Sturmgewehr.com

Sturmgewehr.com is now transitioning to a pay to post advertising site for commercial level users.  This has been a long time coming, after remaining a completely free site for almost 17 years.  Hopefully you have adjusted to, and now enjoy the new format features that were put in place beginning on 1/8/16.  We are now prepared to begin the next phase of the new Sturm, beginning with commercial level members.  If you have an FFL above C&R level, or operate a business selling firearm related parts, you are considered a commercial user.  We will transition non-commercial members at a later date.

In the past, we have relied on t-shirt sales, and other promotional items to attempt to offset some of the costs associated with the site, and have personally made up the difference out of pocket.  Since 2004, when we had to transition to a dedicated server and ISP host to accommodate the bandwidth of the site, this has amounted to tens of thousands of dollars.  We've received some donations from users of this site in the past, and many donations from the extremely supportive members of our sister board, Machinegunboards.com.  We’re quite grateful for all support sent our way over the years.  Our intent with transitioning to a pay to post format is to offset all costs, and hopefully recover some past deficits.  We don't intend to gouge anyone...You will see that the subscription rates are reasonable, and they are necessary to maintain and upgrade the site going forward.  You can choose your level of support for Sturm by the rank level you choose, which is accompanied by the ability to post a certain number of advertisements on the market board.  The cost per advertisement is low, when divided by the total cost of the rank, and considerably more cost effective than on auction sites.  You may also choose a higher rank to help support the site, even if you don’t intend to use the associated number of market board ads.  Again, your support is very much appreciated.

FYI, all commercial level ranks include the ability to post images directly through the website.  References to Gallery images are for the Gallery section, which is a tab at the top of the page for sharing collection photos.

Sturmgewehr.com is a very effective selling tool, with an audience mostly focused on NFA items.  We hope you are able to interact and profit in a friendly environment where we look out for one another, and share in our hobby and collector interests.

Sincerely,

David and Andy Albert

A new world order has begun. I guess the free lunches weren't quite enough.

Necessary of course but that's progress.

If you pay for a certain level and then realize half way thru the year you need to upgrade to a higher level do you just pay the difference?

If that happens, you will need to start over again with the purchase of a new rank for another year.  We will not be able to bridge between ranks because it is not within the capability of the software, and it would involve too much time to track manually.  It also would create a disincentive to purchase higher ranks.

As a reminder to commercial level sellers, we will be ending the posting grace period very soon - after which you will be able to respond to ads on boards and create new topics in the other areas, but you will not be able to post new ads in the buy/sell areas.  We recommend that you upgrade your account before then, to avoid any inconvenience.

There was an issue with the store last week, but it appears to be resolved. Commercial users should consider expediting their account upgrades.

Regards.

A question on the "X" number of ads per year for "$X".  Is that "X" the number of currently running ads or are you allowed to only post "X" ads total within the 12 month period?

Don,

Currently running ads are not counted.  When you upgrade your membership, the 12 month period will begin.

If there was some way to implement it, what I would like to see is a simple pay per ad option available to all commercial ranks.  It is hard to predict a year in advance how many ads one might wish to post.

Example - If you have a Captain account, currently you would pay $25 / year which gives you access to the site, plus 5 ads at a net cost of $5 each per year. If you want to post more than your included 5 ads, you can pay for each additional ad as placed at your account level established rate of $5 each.   If your rank was 3 Star General, then for your $200 you get the extra perks that come with that plus your 160 ads / year cost you $1.25 each.  Once you have used up your 160 ads, then you can continue to pay $1.25 / ad through the rest of your subscription time, renewing, upgrading or downgrading whatever account you have established at the 1 year point based on how the year went for you.

This would allow a seller to put more ads up when they have more items to sell at some point during the year, tapering off when they have fewer items to offer. Of course if the software system doesn't offer any way of monitoring that, then it would become too complicated for you gentlemen to keep track of payments and extra ads posted.  If the software won't work this way, you might consider an honor system for the additional ads on a trial basis to see how well that is adhered to. You could always cut it off if people abuse it.
