Savage M1 Thompson Serial # 198840

We have the following transferable Savage manufactured M1 Thompson Submachine Gun, serial number 198840 available for sale.  Savage Arms likely manufactured this Thompson in mid 1942, and they did so under contract for the Auto-Ordnance Corporation in Bridgeport, CT.  M1 and M1A1 Thompsons manufactured during WWII were produced by either Savage, or Auto-Ordnance in Bridgeport, CT, and all were marked with the AOC Bridgeport address.

This weapon was refinished during an arsenal rebuild at some point in its service, and the buttstock is marked “MR,” indicating it was rebuilt at the Mount Ranier Arsenal at Ft. Lewis, WA.  The barrel has been prick-punched to indicate a barrel replacement.  During rebuild, the weapon was not remarked as M1A1, and it still has an M1 bolt.  The weapon features the later style Lyman sight with protective ears, but has the earlier, pin-style fire control levers, and the later style buttstock featuring a reinforcing crossbolt.  The wood on this M1 is very nice.  One unusual marking is seen on the underside of the horizontal foregrip, where an “F” has been stamped.  This marking has been observed on other M1 Thompsons in the same location, but it is not a manufacturer mark.  The riveted grip mount is marked with a “W,” indicating manufacture by Wild Fowler Decoy in Saybrook, Massachusetts.

The lower frame on this M1is mismatched, which is common for rebuilds, as there was no requirement to keep receivers and lower frames matched up during rebuild, and marking of the serial number on the lower frame was discontinued as production progressed.  The lower frame serial number is 34689, and it has hammer marks from the rebuild process along the magazine guide rails, probably to improve smooth magazine insertion.

An Ordnance wheel marking is stamped on the receiver, and is also marked “FJA,” indicating it was inspected by Colonel Frank J. Atwood of the Rochester, NY Ordnance District.  It additionally features the Auto-Ordnance acceptance stamp of "GEG" for George E. Goll.  The "GEG" stamp appears twice; once on the receiver nose, and once above the magazine well.  George E. Goll was the longest serving employee of Auto-Ordnance, beginning as General Thompson's chauffeur, and he ended up becoming the President of the Auto-Ordnance Division of Maguire Industries during WWII.  The trigger frame serial number on this Thompson matches the receiver, which is a plus, because trigger frames were commonly switched out during service, and at some point during production, serial numbering the lower frame was discontinued.

This is a great “shooter,” and/or collector M1 Thompson, in nice overall condition.  It’s a fine looking example of an M1 Thompson that was manufactured during the early days of World War II.
