What to know about buying 1st MP5

Double Tap Firearms

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Looking to buy my first MP5. I like the MP5K SD. Are the SDs any trouble? Is a sear the best way to go? What is better double push pin or pinned and clipped? Anything to watch out for. I am a dealer, but wife says need to buy transferable. Recommendation on what would be good price.

Thanks David

The SD's are iconic and enjoyably quiet but require frequent cleaning. Some armorers recommend cleaning after 300 rounds.

The best way to go depends on what your goals and budget are.

Sears are known at best bag for the buck since you can have multiple hosts on the same pack (be able to have 9mm, 10mm, .40S&W, 5.56, .308, 300BLK, 7.62X39 all on same sear).

Double push pin guns are the most correct to the German design if you want original but you're paying a lot of money for a single MG.

My personal opinion is that a sear is the best route. My father has a DLO pack and the nice thing about that is you just buy semi auto versions of what you want to shoot and swap in the trigger pack.

Other option would be to buy a Pre-May sample. Its cheaper than transferable and you can keep it after giving up your SOT.

Good luck with your search. There are a few examples available on Strurm.

Thank you very much for your response and the information. I thought about pre sample. But my wife says my next one needs to be transferable LOL.

If you're a dealer thats not a good way to spend (tie up) money. There are a lot better investments especially since the growth of the NFA market will continue to slow due to cost of entry.  I've sold my transferable's and used the money to buy cheap sears to use in solid guns. I can buy pre samples if I want to hang on to them and You can have more bang for your buck

AFA the MP5 I would get a sear, buy a SP5 or 94 and get a can. You get the quiet of the SD without all the asspain. Once you have that HK benchmark you can get the K or SD version. SD versions take too much maint, especially if you shoot a lot.

If nothing else, start with the plain jane mp5

Same here,

I'd never start with an MP5SD.  That would be about 7th on the list of HK's with a sear.  I'd start full size, K, rifles/ beltfed, then wander down the SD path which is what I did.  While I like the SD's they are for minimal usage and special use, not everyday shooters.   Due to the design, putting a suppressor on any HK can result in issues....thus the SD.

Those SD cans fill with lead and powder. Cut a no longer silent one in half once, it was packed solid. Reduces the 9mm to .380 ballistics. True, on a pre sample, you can keep it after you let your license go, but dies with you. Unless your heirs are an SOT, it's got to sell (unless something has changed....like ATF's mind....another reason I've avoided pre samples, just one ATF fickle change of mind of becoming a post same again. Go with a transferable.  I like the  compactness of the MP5KPDW, but like the Mini Uzi, it beats the crap outta my cheek. Out of all the MP5's I've owned, I prefer the A2/A3. Get a sear or trigger pack unless you get a steal on a push pin gun.

What would be a steal?

I seen a registered receiver Navy lower, with three round burst, go for about 33,000 the other day. Would that have been a good deal? Thanks David

Actually, yes it is a good price considering the market of the last 5 or so years. Those guns peaked at over 40K a few years ago. I never paid more than $2,600 for a transferable HK MP5, but those days are long gone. Still shaking my head over paying $18,000 for a Colt M16A1 and $7,000 for a MAC10, but YOLO.

Thanks for all the replies. Any place to buy parts or magazines reasonable when I do get a hold of one?

People randomly list magazines here on Sturm. As for retail, RTG Parts is a good resource for reasonable prices. HK Specialist is another online retailer for parts and accessories.  HK Parts usually has the largest selection but are known for price gouging.

To reiterate a lot of opinions here, sear is a little more money but allows you to use it in different calibers. It is like having multiple MG's for the price of one. However be prepared to go down the rabbit hole of purchasing sear hosts in every caliber.

I believe John Norrell (JNI) currently has a Fleming sear available on Sturm for a good price ($32k). Flemings are well regarded sears, just need installed in a trigger pack with a correctly timed hammer.

Neat! I've never seen one of those before.

I too like quiet. And don't get me wrong, I have an MP5SD host. I bought a TPM gun and can. After every outing, I disassemble the can and clean each baffle and inside the tube and spray with anti-splatter spray. Plus I clean the barrel ports and exterior of the barrel. They can build up carbon quickly and if not cleaned, can solidify and make quite difficult.
