Looking to get a transferable Chinese AK... advice?

Looking to get a Chinese AK, and it looks like stamped Chinese AK conversions are the most plentiful. The majority I've seen are Polytech AKs, anything I should be careful of when looking at these conversions? I'm wondering if it may be safer to get one in 223 and then have it professionally worked on for a 7.62 or maybe even a 5.45 conversion. Most of them are underfolders which I don't really care for.

Are Minshan and Norinco AKs also equal in quality to Polytech?

And I'm also trying to gauge how much a milled Chinese AK might cost. Seems they're far more difficult to come across. I don't think I could afford a vet bring back from Vietnam, but I'm wondering if I could still be in the ballpark for a rewelded example. Thanks for any advice or help you guys can offer.

Oh and if the AK is listed as 223 on the existing paperwork, can it still be converted to other calibers?

when all the semi AK's landed it was  obvious a major quality issue was at hand. what the Chinese cant seem to get in their  head is MOST AMERICANS are quick to weed out and reject the junk. after several models failed to move, most brought the quality up and the all came pretty close.  in actual service, the soviets proved the stamped guns were the way to go, but I still prefer milled . after using almost every brand to the point of destruction I would rate POLY TECH an easy best with NORINCO very close. i would not suggest you buy something with plans to rework it. the right gun at the right price is out there and will show its face sooner or later  in the last couple years most the milled guns I know have sold came danged close to $30k in both private and auction sales. many decent stamped guns have been offered under $25k. when it comes to the registration caliber is not controlled other than the original manufacturer must mark it when built. the end user can change it with no need to alter the registration .

Hey.. I'm a quality oriented slope.  O.o:D

Definitely stereotypically the Chinese like going cheap as they can get, they don't care about quality as much as making a profit. I've met quite a few that way.. but also I know quite a few that spend lots of money (on tooling, training, etc) to manufacture their stuff right.

Oof... as a Chinese American, I definitely winced a couple of times rereading this thread over the last several days. I've lived in America all my life and consider myself a red blooded patriotic American. Wish Mike used some different words there, but as a long time lurker of these boards, I've seen all the advice and help he's given out to others over the years. Hopefully now that I've "outed" myself as a Chinese American, he'll still be willing to give me assistance going forwards.

Ended up finding a nice and almost unused 223 Polytech AK for a good enough price I don't mind paying the difference in converting it to a different caliber. Only issue I had with it is that it's an underfolder, and I hear they kinda suck to shoot in full auto. I think I may try to find a Chinese spiker kit (or even see if I can find a full rifle at a decent price) to make it into a full stock 7.62x39 Spiker build. Another option would be to convert it to 5.45 or even leave it in 223 and find more mags. Hmm...

Take the gun out and shoot a few mags to make sure it work before modifying it. It pays to make sure the base gun works properly.

How many times have you heard the story of the gun that didn't work. the person purchases a gun and changes parts. then he test fires it and it doesn't work.Try it before mods.

I think you'll find that Sturm has a varied cast of characters, each with a unique style. The people in charge of this board seem to have given quite a bit of leeway here with regards to speech. I hope that such leeway continues in the future. That being said, I hope that all of us use some discretion and think about how our words may affect the freedom that we have been given here, and more importantly, how our words affect our fellow enthusiasts in the NFA community.

...

I look at it this way: at the end of the day, you are either an American or you are not. If you have pledged your loyalty to this Great Nation, that's all that matters to me. It sounds to me like you are in the American camp, brother.

Personally I very much enjoy mike's candor and not offended by it.. I feel the world has way too much political correctness. It's always refreshing that a person speaks their mind without having to worry about hurting someone's feelings. I prefer the honesty to the half lies.

Nevertheless.. I think we are getting sidetracked from the original poster's purpose. Sorry johnson184.

If you're considering converting a Chinese underfolder into a fixed stock configuration, be aware that there's a lot of fabrication needed at the back of the receiver to make that happen. Not only is there a big hole in each side of the receiver for the underfolder to pivot in that would need to be patched, the Chinese guns were cut at an angle at the rear, similar to the shape you see on the back of the milled receiver guns and that missing section would need to be grafted onto the receiver as well.
If you want a fixed stock version, you're really better off waiting until you locate one that was originally built that way.
If, for example, you end up buying a .223 underfolder and have a smith modify the receiver into a full stock configuration and do a caliber change, the receiver work will be visible and the gun will be harder to sell and probably for less than what it would be worth if you left it in it's original configuration.
Your best bet might be to post a "WTB" in the appropriate section on this forum detailing what you're looking for. You might end up with what you want without having to modify or change anything.

GADS GUYS, I AM SORRY ! recent events made it easy for me to loose myself . I had spent 2 weeks watching newscasts attempting to make me feel bad because I was white. people that really know me would never believe I typed that post. if you check my employee records for the 22 years I was in business you will know.  when I came back to the thread just now I was ASHAMED! and felt the need to edit it in order to erase any bad feelings I may have conveyed.  all that said an enemy from the past is still that!  you wont find anything in my home made in VIETNAM.  I spent a lot of my young years at my Grand parents taking care of my blind Grandfather. he survived the march from Corregidor to BATAAN but came home blind and could hardly walk, they burned bamboo under his toenails so its easy to hate the Japanese citizens , but NOT Japanese Americans . I believe MOST of the problems this nation is suffering is because of all the attention to "CULTURAL ORIGIN" rather than being AMERICAN. destroying statues ? banning flags? separate nations within our borders? I dont know about you but I did not see a single AMERICAN toss a brick or loot a store on the news.

thanx guys, honestly I never had any intention to offend . that I had bothered me so much since I posted the apology its all I could think about.  with no desire to get myself in trouble again, this is my definition of a few slang words that are often used when describing folks involved in negative behavior. NONE of these apply to all people of a specific race.                 "HONKY" = white person, most often a "redneck" in a car signaling females most often "black" to join them for a cup of coffee or something                                                                    "CRACKER"= white person, often also a "HONKY" that  treats people of color like he owns them or wishes he did.                                                                                                             "NIGGER" = a person of color that believes all "CRACKERS" owe them a free ride, often involved in antisocial behavior and has a propensity for violence and much more.                   "UNCLE TOM"= a person of color that attempts normal social interaction with white's. term used almost exclusively used by a "NIGGER"                                                                          "SLOPE" = an oriental person, residing outside the U.S. lacking empathy or value of life. thriving at a stone age level of awareness.                                                                                 "SPIC"= a spanish person, that feels no need for auto insurance or drivers license, believes front yard is for parking only and uses trash for landscaping only.                                       "WETBACK"= almost always a "SPIC" but an illegal alien. believes we owe them the right to vote and use all our social services without paying any taxes                                               "RAGHEAD"= MUSLIMS from anywhere that demand freedom of religion and the right to hate AMERICANS and our way of life.                                                                                     "SOCIALIST" any person but most often one of the above that feels others owe them an equal existence  without all the work                                                                                           "AMERICAN"= any person, that supports the constitution , contributes to society with honest work and defending others right to happiness, while being responsible for their actions.      by the way, first time I heard "SLOPE" was by STEVE McQueen 1966, as JAKE HOLMAN , SANDPEBBLES great movie for you SPRINGFIELD FANS. funny how easy it is to get of track on these threads , but thats most of the cost of a long range affair sometimes it just fits. again thanx for the BEER and all the support!

A classic movie. I love the BAR action scenes.
