I miss the old board as Buddy kept it clean from junk and fast to read thru. I have use a few WTS boards were people can respond to your adds and half are tire kickers and tie up sales. I also hope the this one will let you can delete your old adds to free up space like the old one.

Thanks for the great OLD board

Buddy is on the board.

So, did y'all buy the board from Buddy? Turn it into a commercial site?

Not judging. Just A LOT of us here were HUGE fans of the way he handled things and were 'known' without ever having to register before. Now I'm no one after nearly $500,000 in purchases and about $200,000 in sales over the past few years.

How do I get that all back?

I ask too much but, I'm sure, many others feel the same.

Just want to know the drill in this brave new sturm...  Thanks

I have always been the owner of the board (since May of 1999) - I stepped up when Vollmer was shutting down, conceived of and bought the domain, setup the original scripts, designed the site, ran it from a spare server at work, and helped moderate and deal with things on a regular basis till about 2004 (back then we also had Grant Janssen helping out as well, for those of you tracking Sturmgewehr.com history).

After years of my brother and I paying for it (with the help of donations, but many times out of pocket - which could be money for a new gun, or one of our children's educations), it was decided that the board should be taken commercial, as that was the only way to ensure its survival (a lot has changed in the last 15+ years - new software and features are required, and that costs money).

As to the question about Buddy, he is still here and is applying his years of internet gun site info to helping weed out scammers behind the scenes, while enjoying a much deserved vacation from the day to day runnings of the site.

In the case of ftldrben, taking this site commercial is what will preserve your years of purchases, etc... With the old board format, there really was nothing keeping Joe Bloe from posting "I want to donate my NFA items to the Obama Presidential Museum"  as your username  - especially if he was in the Florida area as your screen name suggests (so his IP would come from a Florida ISP) - the concept of username HiJacking had become a problem. With the new site, via the registration process, users can stake out their name, and build or maintain their reputation.  So you ask the question of how do you get that all back -- well there was never a tracking system to begin with - only your screen name - which you can still have (I assume that you registered under the alias you were using on the old site).  Rank wise, we have X number of users who used the old site with zero registration - we had to bring everybody in at a starting point (Seaman), but if you think to the old site, there were no "user levels", so that really hasn't changed.  As the new membership levels are finalized, you will be able to upgrade your existing membership as a non-commercial user, for what will honestly amounts to a few magazine dumps at the range.

Change can be hard, but in this case, it is for the better.. The new sturmgewehr.com site offers a lot more features (image hosting for advanced levels - which was a problem for many, registered names, an editor that shows you the formatting as you edit, etc) and goes a long way towards ensuring that it doesn't fall towards the wayside, or simply become irrelevant.

aalbert,

Thank you and your brother for carrying on the tradition... I have learned many usefull things about firearms over the years as well as finding some great items ...

Just hope that the commercialism doesn't clutter the site and distract from the spirit of passing on the knowledge.

Keep up the good work!

aalbert,

THANK YOU for explaining. I had no idea. Always dealt with Buddy (and liked his style...albeit he'd come down on my case for not posting my ads to his liking...)

Glad y'all are updating with the same ownership. It was tough getting accustom to the new format on ar15.com and other sites in the recent past (don't even remember how long ago that was). But this site and Uzitalk are serious biz, change sends up red flags... appreciate you taking the time for the clarity.

Best of luck with the new format.

Andy, thank you for posting up, not only the History of Sturm, but where Sturm is now headed. You are correct - Change can be Hard - However, it is usually much easier when there is an explanation (like what you wrote) and we know how to use the new features of the site. So far, I REALLY LIKE THE NEW SITE!!!!!!

Keep up the great work.

well deserved vacation.... I do hope he is kicking back on his tropical island zapping some cool beverages while waiting for the barrels to cool...please send some pics so the rest of us poor frozen bastards can see the good life...

Very well said and I am sure Buddy wishes that were the case, however he was most likely going thru his vast collection and trying to remember how he ended up with such an

Awesome collection. At some point in the future (hopefully) we will start to see some items come up for sale, if not, we always have his picture collection to drool over!

Thanks for sharing the background.  Very interest I had no idea of the past Sturmgewehr history.

Same here. I liked some parts of the old site, like being able to post WTB adds in the main "NFA" area. Perfect example is go look at the WTB area. I posted a add in the WTB area, and one in the NFA area.

The one posted in the "NFA" area got moved to the "wtb" area, and look at the difference in views. 18 for the "NFA" one, 2 in the "wtb" area. No one ever looks at the wtb areas, on this site or any other number of web forums. It's just a fact of life. That part I miss from the old sturm. :(

I give a lot of credit to David and his brother for creating and maintaining the boards for all of us to enjoy and make a few bucks now and then,

My son and I had a discussion board a few years back and it is a LOT of work, money and aggravation to run, with little reward. We were ready to pack it in when David stepped up and offered to take it over as machinegunboards.com, which he improved and still operates.

To the Albert brothers and Buddy I salute your efforts!

So Buddy is no longer a "moderator" here?

See Buddy's comments, quoted below, from 12 Jan 2016. Buddy is still here, Moderating and Posting Ads. His style of Moderation is now more Covert than on the prior rendition of Sturm.

It does not say if he has "moderation" abilities. Is he just one of the guys now? Lots of people stay away because of him and I am just wondering if things have really changed here.

Look, MOMO, I don't know what else to tell you… Buddy is Obviously here and he IS Definitely Moderating, regardless of whether or Not his profile indicates that… Let's examine the evidence… As quoted, AGAIN, Buddy makes it very Clear that he is continuing to Moderate on the New Sturm: "I can work  'behind the scenes' ....... PLUS the new tools will cut down my workload here .... By 95%"

Still don't believe it??? Well, let's see what the Owner of Sturm, Andy Albert, had to say on 11 Jan 2016: "As to the question about Buddy, he is still here and is applying his years of internet gun site info to helping weed out scammers behind the scenes, while enjoying a much deserved vacation from the day to day runnings of the site."

I know, without any doubt, that Buddy has the ability to Lock, Move and Delete Ads. He is also able to inactivate Scammer Profiles and Block IPs, etc… Not sure what You call that but it is, generally, referred to as Moderating. Might have helped if you skimmed through this thread a bit before asking what was answered more than once… Rant off.

You seem a tad over the top defensive. You write just like Buddy by the way, condescending and rude. I think we have had enough of that.

No, Not Defensive. Irritated as Hell, would be a much better phrase to describe what I feel, and adequately conveyed, when you persisted in your unfounded doubt despite Proof to the contrary. You obviously did Not read the thread nor did you seem to understand the obvious, even after it was detailed for you. That often causes people to become upset and rightly so. I'm not defending Buddy. He's deleted my Ads whenever I've forgotten one of the rules and I did not enjoy that, however, I screwed-up and I learned very quickly how to post properly. In the end, he kept Order and Crushed a Ton of Scammers, saving untold Dollars and Misery in the process. So MOMO, you may Hate Buddy, however, his actions speak volumes and I'd have to admit he has been a steadfast Friend to our community… Sure he's often Cranky like a Drill Instructor but his training might just save your ass (i.e. $$$$$) And if you wonder why Buddy might be a bit Harsh on occasion, just re-read your posts and multiply that by a thousand - you'd be pissed-off as well. Sorry if I hurt your feelings but sometimes a swift kick to the ass can be a very kind way to wake someone up sufficiently such that they learn from their mistakes. If you like this board, then you owe gratitude to Andy Albert and David Albert and, oh yeah, Buddy as well...

You are making stuff up and I'm not upset. You like bullying I get it, lots of people do this from the comfort of their computer. You apparently think bulling rights are part of your subscription. There is some kind of weird sadomasochism thing going on here and you can have it. A word of advice, if you can't answer the question then don't and you will save yourself a lot of "irritation".

Good day Sir

Good day Sir

You have to be pulling his leg right? It is obvious you have not read any posts in this thread in regards to Buddy's status. If you don't like it around here move on AR15dotcom could use another person such as yourself. I figured the new Sturm weeded out guys like you but I guess a few slip through the cracks
