  1. pics? HA HA. you are talking to someone that has assembled over 300 belt fed nfa and several cannons several 200 mph+ drag cars from scratch had 136 employees at one time but cant DO ANYTHING WITH ELECTRONIC PHOTO'S despite spending more than $1200 on cameras and related. I have had many kind offers of assistance from other board members but have declined due to my ignorance of terminology. I live very remote, town takes most of a day and I cant get anyone to the ranch. if thay came they would most likely run as there is a live Vickers and rus maxum on the front porch. I have managed to text a few but its a pain. I am still working on it as I have several tons of surplus to sell , no family and only hang out with my dog and a few cancer cells
  2. which one? ALL ? I'm still confused , must be the meds . certainly cant have anything to do with all the "roll marks" " forgings" " archives". I was certainly entertained ,and hope to use much of the proffered info that I can back up with facts in the future. somewhere the whole thing got lost and became a "post round" clubhouse discussion about who has what and who has the longest or thickest one by the original "WTB POSTER" while attempting to devalue the information offered by dedicated enthusiast's only trying to keep a newbie from doing something completely unrealistic. like the two kettle's talking in one post, like minded folks are quick to recognize others with common ground and will gravitate to one another to the benefit of ALL. one cannot do everything on his own, and ego will only help you find your best friend (yourself) then you are truly ALONE. my father taught me there comes a time to shut up and listen in EVERY conversation. most of my experience with nfa pre dates the post 86 madness and I rely on many of the folks here for current factual updates. DID NOT SOMEONE MENTION BEING ADMINISTRATOR OF A FORUM WITH 4 MILLON POSTS ? WONDER WHY HE BOTHERED TO COME HERE WITH A CLOSED MIND? perhaps rev moon got more followers by such surfing? thanx for all the good stuff in this thread! I do know who / what to ignore mike
  3. in the mac system, the lower is the receiver IE; it contains the fire control components and accepts the barreled upper. some units allow a change in the magazine housing with no alterations. hope that help with your quest. its always wise to ask when not sure ! KEEP DIGGING mike
  4. FRANK, thanx for all the help adding to my inventory! yes the way things are, its probably best most stay within the accepted norm and don't take any risks. I WAS SIMPLY MAKING A POINT AND RELATING WHAT I EXPERIANCED. it was an entirely different situation when a new transferable 19 was overpriced at $600. many others from my era (OLD) still seek the turk and use it for components, like I do all the 40's dated gets pulled and loaded back in reformed 30/06 brass. I use a ponsness waring 5 stage in line press for that and have no trouble with 400+an hour I get a real kick out of the guys that spend more time at the keyboard and screen rather than a press or behind a tripod. I don't fault them for that, but do take exception when false information is passed along as fact. some like BOB NAESS you learn are beyond reproach and follow without question, but even that came by comparing it to personal experience. I have been told by others I respect that bob discovered Turkish 8mm with primers mixed in the powder charge all dated in the 40's. I have never found anything other than a major velocity variation. I can only attribute that to poor storage as the charge weights were in order. enough on the turk . lets discuss the indian .308 a bit. for a while the ammo being sold was simply surplus and sold due to age and the conversion to .556 for main battle rifle, under nato quidlines as they reached the end and the real cleanout commenced it became much like an early morning below cost sale at macy's with the all the importers trying to beat the other with a find. all of the defective/ out of spec ammo was kept separate for proper disposal at the plants like any other facility. in the end it was sold as scrap and imported to the U.S. for components. upon its arrival, it was then sent to be packaged for commercial sale by a private contractor. guess what? someone lost rack of the scrap and it went along with the good. of course MOST of the obvious got pulled, like bad projo's dents etc. BUT NOT ALL a lot got packaged with short bullets, bad necks and what have you. need less to say it didn't take long for the problem to show up and the reputable vendors bailed. still some lots continued to be offered by some of the mail order catalog sources for a while. again, I managed to purchase a large quantity for less than .08 per rnd. after pulling several hundred rounds I found the average "good" rnd had a charge of 41 grns of powder. charge weights varied from17 grains to the 41. I developed a system for pulling and putting it back together. the best I could do was 63 rnds per hundred with a full 41 grn charge. along with timing I was very fortunate in being self employed and had a loading press on my desk. also I made a deal with a couple other shooters allowing them to keep 2 rnds out of every 6 the produced. again it worked out very well for me and the indian.308 was a winner. I am a shooter, and do so several days out of the week. I have been fortunate and this has been the case more than 55 years. in the 60's if I was not shooting, I was at some exotic location looking for surplus. I know the future of the sport depends totally on the drive and needs of those involved. few will justify a $ 15k + item in the safe to look at. consequently I will share anything that may help one shoot more . when i managed to buy argentine 1919 kits for less than $100, I actually gave several away to young men that had the drive to build a semi auto holding free build party's in my shop. all to boost the cause and increase awareness. if all I do here is make one think a bit different it may be a plus, if not you all can have a good laugh, cheers mike .
  5. wow! you whupped me good! I tried to follow you lads and was lost after the first sentence concerning "roll marks" personally I follow all I can about questionable post 86 firearms that have been approved and the transferee has been allowed to keep them. an individual that I did some business with in Arizona, recognized by many as an expert in class 3 and a licensed dealer for many years is currently incarcerated at a federal prison for handling the transfer of weapons that had been remarked. of course I don't know all the facts but was told he simply did the dealer to dealer transfers for an individual from one state to another . the govt's position was his history and knowledge provided enough proof he knew the weapons were not legal and he was part of the conspiracy. there is no way to describe all that went on just prior to the 86 deadline, in an attempt to maximize profits. I observed 4'x12' sheets of 1/8" plate with no's stamped every 24", and the same with 20 ft length's of tubing. in many cases only papers were filled out. not even bothering to buy the material. now that things have settled down we only have to deal with things like this from time to time. often I am asked for advice from potential buyers concerning unusual examples such as this. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, but I would rely on anything official from a mfg'r such as pat date's, production records etc. if anything conflicts even in the smallest detail , I say PASS. what do you say to the owner of an M-60 when the paperwork AND the trunion say BM-59 ??? when he wants to trade it off, or a widow needs to liquidate .EVERYTHING looks on the level , until you lay the weapon next to the paperwork or compare it with pic's in small arms of the world. how far are we from ATF requiring photo's of the possible weapon in a transfer? OKAY $70K for an m-16, not in my book but if that makes NEO happy and all he is responsible for are fed and have shelter, 3 CHEERS FOR HIM. I ONLY HAVE ISSUE WITH THE GREY ISSUE AND POSSIBLE CONFLICT IN THE FUTURE! I want to add a special thanx to mr albert and all the other administrators for their patience and allowing this thread to continue. again one of the main features of this site is the sharing of knowledge and situations we find ourselves in chasing this stuff... cheers mike
  6. GOOD BARRELS? chambers , YES very easy take a virgin round, one that has NEVER been chambered. I keep a box of quality commercial on hand in every caliber I have. place the round in the chamber (clean) and make sure it inserted well past the "webb" of the case. IE; the solid portion of the case, below the rim. when I first started the Russian conversions, I took a new USGI .30 cal brl , inserted a round and measured how much case protruded. this became the model for all future conversions. I don't have one in front of me but its somewhere around .225-.250. others chose to market barrels/conversions with out any research and created some real monsters. when blown top covers first surfaced on the 1919 board, I ordered a brl from a vendor in 8x57. the case protruded more than 1/2" due to a shallow chamber and EVERY ROUND would have blown up. when I questioned them, the response was to ignore normal headspace procedure and to screw the brl in the extension, as tight as possible. of course this still left the case unsupported.. EVERY BARREL IN EVERY caliber I examined had a short chamber!! in 2015 at the rock island auction, I bought a lot of brng brls that had 6 , new 8x57 barrels. ALL of which had short chambers. I cant stress this enough, check every barrel you use before you do, even govt barrels as you don't know what they have been through before you got them. WHILE IM sure there are other's, the ONLY vendor I would personally trust, IS TROY EDLUND at the barrel exchange. but the bottom line is you are in control and as long as you check will have no problem. if the weapon is headspaced properly with in spec parts, ammo that was loaded to spec when made , no matter how old is safe. you may loose a primer or split a case. personally I ignore all that in my brownings as parts are easy to get and the design is robust. of course I get choosy when it comes to my 34 and 42. they were a problem for the germans DURING PRODUCTION AND ISSUE. bushwacker was correct and passed on GOOD info. more importantly he shared his experience in an attempt to help and that's the purpose of this board. SUPPORT FOR LIKE MINDED FOLKS I NEVER FAULT ANYONE FOR THIER DECISION AND CHOICE! its all a learning experience and I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the HEYDAY when things were every where and easy to get. more importantly KEEP EM SHOOTING! cheers mike
  7. I had one! got it with a bunch of "grey stuff" that an importer brought in and got cold feet with. In an attempt to establish legality with out putting me or my collection in danger, I managed to have a retired atf examiner at a SAR SHOW give his opinion. he stated its importation was not legal as done, and was not aware of anyway it could be registered. at best its "any other weapon". again I'm no expert that was just the way it went down for me.
  8. AHH the after market quandary show's its bad side in a potentially major issue. while I am NOT a dealer past experience has shown that any exposure to law enforcement would result in the current markings and serial number on the report. any NOT EXISTING MARKINGS would be a guess at best. the only way to retrieve the original marks would deface it now consider this, yes it was a "pre 94 sp89" but that's not the case anymore. when was it redone? that is its new birthday. if done by a lic manufacturer it should be logged in, establishing its "birth". see my point? I have several examples in the same boat, but I DONT LIVE IN CONNECTICUT ! KUNTA BE FREE ! I LIVE IN TEXAS!!! at least for now! cheers mike
  9. james, I was a bit hesitant to respond to this, I made the first caliber conversions for the brownings and sold a few starting in the late 60's. I can tell you for a fact that all the blown guns I or associates examined were due to faulty barrels and so called experts giving wrong headspace directions. this worked out to my advantage as the big boys like J+G in Prescott az and others stopped selling the turk and other lots of 8mm. in turn I purchased just short of 1 mill rnds for less than .04 AND THIS WAS IN THE LATE 90'S. I still shoot the turk 8mm / 50's Yugo in ALL my brngs. I have never blown a case, but HAVE lost some primers to be honest. no way to track it but a lot of the Yugo 8mm was made for the brngs. see they had all of our guns that the germans captured early in the African campaign along with MANY OTHERS. on a buying trip I managed to include a large quantity still in links dating 48/49 again never a problem. the older Yugo ammo will have VERY hard primers which limits were it can be used and adding to the bad reputation. another issue that surfaced at the same time as blown top covers, was covers coming open while running which meant a broken extractor PLUS. this was due to improper builds,IE the topcover latch clearance. NO I WOULD NOT SUGGEST YOU RUN OUT AND BUY TURK 8MM, save it for me. but I would not hesitate to run ANY Yugo 8mm in your brng. the way to play that is choose a vendor, get a small amount, test it the respond accordingly. it should be less than 1/2 the price of the new stuff and well worth it. the sad part of this is we have had no control over its storage since imported exposure will be a big issue. I keep ALL my ammo in climate controlled storage and have done so the last 45 years. I still have a large quant of WWII brass german I use in my 34/42 . last summer I noticed we were shooting 1918 dated FA 30/06 in a couple belts??? as long as the headspace is right with a proper chamber , the worse thing you can expect , is a mis fire or no cycle THE AMMO TO BE WORRIED ABOUT IS ANYTHING FROM SOUTH AMERICA!!!! can you say BOOBY TRAP? I witnessed a Canadian bren explosion and picked up a sample from the can. found it to be stuffed full of pistol powder!. an argentine colonel related to me that they indeed planted booby trapped ammo for the insurgents to liberate , that's all it took to convince me. shooting and contributing to others shooting, was the sole motivation for me to market the caliber conversions. when I became disabled and unable to meet my commitments, I turned the whole operation over to troy at barrel exchange who has done FAR BETTER THAN I to keep these things running. its been fun the only limit to the brong system was links but I did run 38spl/.357, .410, 6.5 dutch,7x47, 7x57, 8x57 30/30 7.62x39, 5.45x39 7.62x54 as time passes options will vanish. with all the ammo I have on hand, I still scrounge small lots at the show's for components and suggest you do the same while you can. I see 9 round belts in the near future any way so we might be limited to looking at best... cheers mike ps, if you have failure to fire in your 17, relieve the face of the fire pin to increase protrusion. go slow a little at a time to avoid punctures. this has worked well for me with some lots
  10. pin tumbler update. well after a week throwing everything I could in it, I FINALLY HIT THE WALL ! everything was clean, BUT THE PINS AND DRUM? I put a bunch of Vickers small parts with a light surface rust and ran the machine 1 hour. when I opened it up, everything was covered with a black residue, unlike anything I have ever seen. of course the directions said to clean the pins after every use and I had ignored it like I do most printed matter. again I played around and found "2 pumps" of joy dish soap with HOT water , it took 4 times flushing it clean between each to get them back. I then dryed the pins in the oven at 225 with a final acetone after drying. this is going to be the worst part of the process, so any new things please share.... cheers mike
  11. jim / guys it looks like several mfgrs make these things i see one now from lyman. while cabellas offers it, mine came from midway and was the same price.. i bought 2 packages of pins and the switchable magnet which is fantastic for cleanup.. they market it to clean brass fast along with a liquid cleaner. i use it completely dry to clean up rust and plan to use water and a capful of joy d wash shop to clean the pins. i just tumbled a group of rings and other small parts with rust and a bunch of nooks that would be hard to get at. again , they came out PERFECT so don't be afraid to try something. please post any secrets you find while playing. cheers mike
  12. several months ago I bought one of these newer case cleaners that use the stainless pins. it sat unsed until I could get to the bullet project I had in mind when I bought it after spending 2 days in the parts washer / sink etc trying to clean 15 round srips for my turk Hotchkiss, I thought I would fire it up and was FLOORED with the results rust strips that were destined for the trash , cleaned like new in less than 35 min with NO FINISH LOSS? next I had 1500 mg81-Z links completely covered with surface rust and NOT USABLE. I was tempted to throw them in the trash many times . if you managed to load one , it would stick and stop the gun.. if offered for sale at all they are .50 or more each same with my .308 Vickers links.. I tossed em in, ran it 45 min and they came out TOTALLY RUST FREE and still have a black tinted "finish" . they load slick and pull perfect so SAVED. now I was hooked and spent all day scrounging for junk to try. links are going to be the major thing for me and this device, but it looks like it will have many other duty's as well I put about 6 pounds of asstd carbine parts. all with surface rust totally. they were slated for glass beads and park. 1 hour later and they all looked NEW. of course a couple of the bands showed slight pitting, but this thing cant make metal. only clean it ! they don't need any refinish!! and are ready to use . to date I have used the pins ONLY. NO fluids , drop of soap. just clean DRY pins the whole package was right at $130.00 at midway and it paid for itself with the first batch of links. NO MESS!! do yourself a favor check it out.. also be sure to get the little magnet gadget they offer. it picks up all the pins that bounce around while pouring them. I cant wait to get up in the am and find more rusty stuff to save! I hope this helps you folks like it did me. CHEERS MIKE TODD
  13. tried to resist but have to get my 2 cents worth in now, FIRST when it comes to this stuff MR NAESS is THE MAN and one should PAY HEED whether you like it or not! until 2000 or so I never had any problem establishing C+R status, IF THE MANUFACTURER ON THE PAPER WORK STATED THE ORIGINAL COUNTRY OF ORIGIN , GOVERMENT ARSENAL ETC. in the never ending "quest" for profit . the stated games began and the ATF TECHNOLOGY folks were not fooled, so now WE ALL PAY THE PRICE I am in the middle of a mess you would not believe and have several transfer's that have been tied up more than 3 years and no end in sight! all involve 100% legit weapons that had previously transferred as C+R'S the REALLY SAD THING HERE IS ALL THE EGO that has taken over . I don't understand why someone has to mount a full offensive when offered information that corrects a mistake as this post had been offered before I was tempted to advise that the mount was NOT a"YUGO-53" ADAPTED, BUT INFACT A POST WAR mg-3/ 42 MOUNT . I chose to leave it be for fear of reprisal. we should all feel free to offer what we believe to be correct information to each other IN THESE FORUMS!!!!! and Always accept correction with GRACE. COME ON, LETS KEEP THE SARCASTIC RESPONSES AT HOME. (she probably deserves them) cheers mike
  14. some posts have mentioned a "personal messenger" on this board , but I have not been able to locate it or any other private connection without doing a couple of posts then going to private email. what did I miss? thanx mike
  15. NACE, i agree they are well built. i have both the folder and fixed variation in the collection and do enjoy taking them for a walk time to time. for a while they were quite reasonable compared to other .223/556 MG's other than firing pins and a few VERY expensive Swedish variation's of furniture you wont find any parts. also optics can be a challenge. you mentioned you were a first time buyer? unless the price is VERY APPEALING i would suggest you search for a converted AR-15 COLT registered push pin lower. the only problem you will have with parts and acc is your wallet. if something breaks at least you have an option. in 1978 i had a bolt bounce explosion in my MG-42 and destroyed the extractor. a gun was around $500 back then. after more than a year of searching i had to pay an aerospace co $1000.00 to make 10 replacements. of course now they are less than $10 but with the political climate being what it is don't count on much NEW stuff finding its way into our market place. it will take a long time to use up all the spares for the colt system out there welcome and good luck with your choice mike
  16. I have been at this a long time and endured a lot of changes in what was acceptable or not . prior to the gun control act becoming law, visiting the local branch to get forms or answers was about the same as visiting the state game and fish office for maps etc. form 4 information requirements were informal and varied AFTER GCA-68 the jack boots went on and all hell broke loose and we became adversary's . my assertion was if an unregistered receiver could put me in jeopardy , that's ALL that was required to be registered and the rest was non of their business.. all of my form 4's from that period have "N/A" for over all length and brl length. maker was "govt arsenal from country in question" even my ar15 forms show that and i was never called to question over it. most of my guns were purchased b4 1968 by me and put in my father or uncles name due to my age. when i turned 21 i paid the trans tax and put them all in my name and had no trouble. when i finally managed to buy my M-60's they kicked the forms back and required oal and brl be on the forms. now i hear there are issue's with details like "swing down" and push pin recievers etc. again i contend the controlled item is all "they" control by law and we must jump through the hoops to get approval. but after that if i want to paint it yellow, put a hole in it its still registered and comply's with the law rulings be damned. what they get away with now is almost criminal!! we are at the mercy of someones mood that changes from day to day. at the 2014 poulin auction i bought 2 costa rican breda 30 mg's from the same 1938 contract 3 serial #'s apart. both were trans to the museum as C+R. i filled out form 4's with C+R info. one was approved one not and the forms defaced with big red letters. i just sent the 4th set of forms in and am still waiting??? until they have to answer to someone this will continue and i feel it will only get worse? mike
  17. jack, I have a spare in my bin. would be glad to loan it for a reverse engineer job if that helps no its not for sale ! but glad to help if I can cheer's mike
  18. YOU CAN RELAX !! while it can be tough to do family friend deals and come out with any self respect, you WON this time ! its hard to tell from the pics but you have a MINIMUM value of $3500 easy. if the finish on the gun has not been messed with and the rest is matching it will bring even more, in my opinion the value is as follows, DWM 1917 artillery luger $1200/ $1500 + holster min $150 , snail drum if functional and not repo $1750/$2500, stock w/lug $500/$750 while the new grips would create a major distraction, at recent rock island and Julia auctions packages like yours have brought an average of $4500 . a drum alone $2600 and a stock $900. these are all + 15% buy premium if there is a loading tool hiding under the holster flap and its orig you can add $350 to $1k again its tough to evaluate with more details I tried to stay on the LOW side . good job!! mike
  19. yup crack did the job 4 me while typing the post and I certainly know how to confirm billing at this stage of my life sadly the price was confirmed by customer service and theirs was ineffective, strange but NO CONTACT since I informed them I would not be sending payment? maybe they are planning some advanced night ops to collect ? as for what I was to send you ? I am at a loss, are you the gent that purchased my PKM? if so during that time I was using a secure pay email account. when I cancelled it, I had no access to any mail thru that source and could not reach you, the belt is still sitting on the shelf along with another new combat can and belt as an apology. send me your ship to, along with delivery details the day we met to confirm I have the right gent and you will get it this time. email is myoldiron@outlook.com mike
  20. anyone here ever attend any of ralph wong's " marana" Tucson shoots in the 60'S and 70's ? Czech 9mm would not sell at .03 rnd then . 8mm was less than .05. these were unbelievable in the quantity of ammo fired but the exotic "PYRO" AND BIG BANG targets were NOTHING compared to today. a lot of cannons were always present . my last one took a 2 ton bobtail to carry ammo only and usually at least a crate of 20mm would go through my lahti. maxims were set up for the lady's and ammo was free to them the whole shoot. IT WAS TAKEN FOR GRANET AT THE TIME, but what a privilege to be with the "legends" like DOLF GOLDSMITH or be next to BOB FARRIS while he emptied his endless supply of loaded belts and mags. then watch as he removed the top cover from another shooters stoner, wedge it in a rear bumper and stomp it with his foot. of course it ran flawless after wards!! due to business concerns I was forced to limit my big shoots to the 3 day's of 4th july and we always took at least 1 full pickup of 70% dynamite . in az fireworks were forbidden but an explosives card was easy took less than 5 min to get, then you were totally free from there. can you imagine doing I-10 with 40 cases of Dyno and no lead or back vehicle TODAY? highway patrol found large hole in the road with scattered metal north of phoenix and determined it was a load of dyno. after a few days they finally ID'd the guy and it was downhill from there. my last shoot at I-10 and miller road was "visited" by nat guard in helo, and DPS . even though the line was apprx a mile in and not visable, traffic was at a standstill westbound on I-10 due to spectator's parking in the safety lane. the video's of on duty law enforcement shooting on the line while "investigating" the event are priceless. that land is state trust land and open for recreation we did the 4th shoot at that location for more than 10 yrs then it was developed too close for comfort .trespass rights in Arizona are hard for others to comprehend , but basically if there is a road ANYONE can proceed, if no occupied houses are present you can set up and shoot. AND WE DID!! a major part of the state is trust land. if you possess a valid hunting lic, you have the "right" to use it . the current shoots are great due to the safety and variation of targets presented but the friendship is a bit too "clicish" for lack of a better term. seems like folks are in competition of who knows who and who has what. I attended the firepower shoot at the SOF convention , MR KOKALIS'S SPEECH to the media was so offensive to me( and others) that we left not wanting to be a part of THAT ATTITUDE. knob creek needs no help from me its fantastic for the spectator's and certainly helps keep things going in a positive direction even though attendance and round count is down that's only because of the cost of ammo and travel today along with the prospect of finding new products imported. I hope to find something in texas SOON that will help me excersise some of these tools and get rid of a BUNCH A BULLETS cheers mike
  21. I have used "e " clips in several applications and never had a problem. it will certainly make the system user friendly but wiil be very obvious. you can always go back to the original design at a later date. I say go for it
  22. yup cincylance hit it spot on! there has been some exceptional condition ZB 26's in recent auctions at $27 / $35k a Nazi marked 30 went for more than that. nothing was posted or advertised for a long time but a couple crudely refinished examples at $25k which finally disappeared somewhere. the interest is always there for the good condition
  23. ron, I suggest you visit the carbine collectors club. david albert one of the owners of this site is a member and posted a link to join is how I found it. those guys know their stuff with NO BULL and will set you straight. for my two cents worth I don't have mags in front of me to tell you the markings but over the years its become easy to tell them at a glance due to how the metal is joined at the rear. some of mine are marked SEY, which I have assumed is seymore mfg. most are not marked I got all my carbine stuff in the late 50's and early 60's thank god before the aftermarket craze took hold and are unquestionably original. in a lo tof parts I got at rock island auctions I found 40 or so what I'm told are European surplus 30 rnd mags from govt arsenals a few have AY and others have AYO stamps . they are equal to my USGI 30's.and run perfect in my guns, while the springs hold up well. I have seen them for sale at the creek so must be available.. important to know NONE OF THE M2 MARKED MAGS ARE GI. they are after narket and most don't work! I see them offered as USGI originals on gunbrkr often so beware best I can do, maybe david will see your post and set you straight. good luck mike

  25. DAVID , I cant agree more . while I'm anxious to keep up with all the latest trends and new gizmo's. straight accurate information on the past is not often available and the new folks along with those of us not so informed can find this information invaluable, possibly leading to a new exciting category to collect. frankly I'm getting tired of the "factual information" thrown at us in a certain publication which seems to be a LOOK AT WHAT I GOT when you get through as the only published source for NFA info and miss the old small arms review. I think this accounts for a lot of the popularity of sturm. a tremendous amount of information gets passed on by knowledgeable folks that have no other venue to share it on KEEP IT UP!!
