  1. GONGRATES ON JOINING UP! more the better.. a first gun is a tough decision and advice hard to get as we are all so darn opinionated. i have been at this a long time and watched hundreds in your position. first place take your time! if you can rent a couple in your price range. avoid the temptation to shoot out of your budget or you will not be happy. the expensive stuff is so for many reasons. like car shopping be ready to "punch" your budget a bit. in reading your post, an uzi would be my first suggestion. a GOOD example is reliable, parts and mags plentifull and reasonable they are easy to suppress and a joy to shoot with reasonable easy to find ammo. its going to be tough without pushing your budget but it can be done and may be worth the wait. i personally own several macs and enjoy them a lot, but they are fast and not good for kids without a suppressor etc. if you go that way i would opt for the powder springs 45 or a "post auction" swd. its tough to find good 9mm mags for them. i have reisings and have a lot of fun with them as well as shooting guests. dependability is mag related but can be overcome parts are tough and the 20 rnd mags can have an effect but the control is faultless. i also like the S+W 76, they don't break and are reliable. some with large hands complain the stock is restrictive at the grip when folded. i would not suggest a sten or sterling for a first timer the stemple 760 is reasonable , but be ready with reliability issue's and not on my list the M11/9 is not on my list either for a first timer. great gun , i have 2 but mags make you fiddle and they are fast as found. you will blow your budget to get there. the beretta 38 is excellent, reliable and accurate with good mags fairly easy to find along with spares, but like the reising can be a bit boring at times.. if at all possible a colt converted AR-15 is ALWAYS my first choice suggestion to a first timer. but reality is $15k min in todays market . it does it all and after the initial hit everything is very reasonable and easy to find and do . 9mm. and other cals as well. while 22lr sounds appealing you wont do much of that if your like most folks and if you reload 9mm costs not much more. the ruger .556 is fine and a good performer with the full stock but forget any parts if something breaks. HOPE I HELPED and again welcome mike todd

  3. wow! an interesting thread to say the least and way to much legal back and forth for my mind to handle. over all i agree totally with johnsonlmg41 as presented as in any legal matter the presentation is everything. the way i see it everything falls back to the original registration. 1 who did it, what they were ( individual or manufacturer) and how it was marked at the time it was done. and was it a form 1. some manufacturers did in fact remove all markings and remark the receivers with their info which was completely legal for a lic manufacturer to do so and many did. many changed the receiver's IE hk push pin etc. atf has ruled many times that push pin receivers had to be done when registered to be legal and others cant be changed to that after the fact . the term maker and manufacturer means exactly that . a manufacturer can do much more than a "maker" but must follow strict procedures. form 1 alterations are just that, a conversion of something someone has already built but a manufacturer CAN take something all ready built and manufacture something else out of it . completely removing ALL markings. In 75 or 76 I blew up an early colt AR-15 mg. when i asked atf about options, I was advised to take it to a manufacturer, they could apply the old serial number to a colt receiver, removing the new serial no add their logo and enter it in their log showing the old rec destroyed. it was stressed a class 2 manufacturer only could do this which we did at that time. in 1996 we asked about the options in that circumstance and of course its a loss and nothing can be done. someone brought up the C+R issue in this thread. a REGISTERED DEWAT is already manufactured and if done so 50 yrs prior can be "rewatted" by ANYBODY and is STILL a C+R. where the problem and confusion comes up is with older guns, like the bren registered AFTER the amnesty before 1986 on a form one or by a lic manufacturer from parts or "whatever". that would NOT qualify as a C+R under the law. I personally own several "rewatted " C+R guns. that were done on a form 1 by me. It all boils down to the ORIGINAL REGISTRATION PAPERWORK. some manufacturers like today did not understand the law and marked the registered "rewatts" with their logo and filled out papers as them the manufacturer even though they were ALL READY REGISTERED AS "DEWATS" sadly that would NOT be a legal C+R. hope i didn't confuse things more and helped clear a few points up cheers mike
  4. the last ones i looked at a show were $65 (sigh) the south Africans were glad to see them go. they were part of a govt program to arm the ranchers against raiders and laid in warehouses for quite some time
  5. what , you want the win markings in the wood? garand stocks are everwhere and originals no problem just expensive. the gent in gilbert , az that tears down all the drill rifles and restocks the shooters for DCM has pallets of originals in every grade. he posts on ebay everyweek and the stocks in sarco's add come from him . you could start there. they don't list the expensive ones in the add , but randy handles the garand stuff
  6. bob, i bought my first one in 62 and the 2 crates of ammo didn't last long so i installed a M-3 aircraft brl first. of course not much was available in .50 cal either so i made my own projo's had to drill cases and press in a base of a 30/06 case and used mag primers with 5010. around 115 grns if i remember right. the next one got a M-2 heavy brl and i bumped the bullet to fit. i have owned 12 or more boyes rifles and still have 3. they are a very hard sell unless you give them away when converted. i have one and have been trying to get $3500 for 4 years with no luck. recoil is intense with ball ammo about twice what the barret is . the last 20 yrs or so i have loaded ammo special just for it and keep it away from my M-2. if i shoot ball in it i don't bother with the mag, just drop the round on top of the bolt b-4 i work it and it feeds fine. at the shoots most folks wont fire it more than once, even mounted on a 17 tripod. cheers mike
  7. what will the next 4 years bring? well I think the best we can hope for is no more "bad legislation" but don't hold your breath for anything existing to go away. if all stays calm internationally all his effort will be needed to get that smell out of the linens and furniture in the whitehouse.
  8. harry, what do you prefer boxed or bandolier? I have both crated. email me direct at myoldiron @ outlook.com
  9. what would you be willing to pay? most of my reference books will go soon. mike
  10. I see you got your conversion , GREAT ! in the future, you might just keep the 308 in the loader and when you want to change back all you need to do is take the cartridge measurement difference, in this case , 12 mm and add a piece of metal to the original pusher. I use super glue as it comes off easy when needed and stays on just fine. if you shoot reloads , its a good idea to use a dermal and route a primer divit in the face. if you do several cals like 54r etc I keep a short pusher (.308) in the loader and add the pieces as needed. cheers mike todd
  11. I'm looking to buy either as a kit or separate parts REMINGTON 870 shotgun folding stock and mag extension with support/ swivel band. years ago remu=ington sold a kit that included a steel top foldin pistol grip stock and a mag extension , also steel. I would buy separate parts, USED or NEW or the whole kit. willing to pay top market as I need them to complete a project. THANKS MIKE!
  12. If you collect German WWII handguns or just like to do the research game, this is the book for you! It covers them ALL with production facts, markings etc. It even cover's all the weapons "pressed into service after they were captured. It gives details of holsters and accessories with fantastic pictures . Has always been tough to find and expensive, but well worth the money. The example I'm offering is the second printing with ALL the updates and is the most thorough printing It cost me $380 in 1988 or so and has been well cared for. I accept U.S. postal money orders only and the price is $400 delivered cont U.S. ONLY thanx MIKE
  13. I have been struggling of and on more than 3 years trying to complete a john Inglis high power pistol . I'm down to needing a complete trigger ass, trigger pin sear spring and slide stop. To date, no one has been able to tell me if FN parts will interchange or not and I have not located a source for the original ones. the gun looks brand new with original finish and even has a partial decal. when I got it all the internals were missing and I have managed to gather all but the above . I'm getting desperate now and need all the help I can get. Gunparts corp has nothing . THANX !! MIKE
  14. KENT I suggest you send a direct inquiry to Johnathon along with a pic he should set you straight from the get go. good luck mike
  15. you are right on ! the 7.50x20 is spec and anything smaller will be loose. I wonder about the origin of the 7.25x20 just for the record. any markings? EURO? thanx mike
  16. I need a couple decent savage 99 lever action .308 rifles for the ranch. I would prefer earlier examples with walnut and cut checkering over the later Hardwood and pressed checkering examples . While I will consider any era and model, bores must be free from pits and bulges. Honest wear is no problem but no extra holes or cracked stocks please. We have on hand .300 savage and I want to eliminate some of the calibers.. While were at it, I think at least one MINT very early example would fit great in the collection but still .308 only please. ALL REPLY'S will be answered. THANX MIKE
  17. BORE, an excellent example was offered at the last poulins sale and went way below legit market from what I have seen in the past. I don't want to post the price here for obvious reasons, it was almost 35% below what I received for mine 5 yrs ago. but I'm sure they post a list. cheers mike
  18. Alan , they did. hence the name HK-4 .22, .25, .32, 380 was all packed together with the required parts. I have never seen anything more than a barrel or a magazine offered by itself . one might consider looking for the complete set when you consider what's asked for the magazines. this year, I have seen 2 of the 4 cal sets and at least that many 3 cal sets at the major auction houses. I don't recall the hammer on the 4 cal but one example nos 3 cal was less than $1k no 380. In the past, I have seen them marked Harrington& Richardson, but I'm sure they were made by HK. HAVE FUN! MIKE
  19. BORE, don't want to meddle but don't you mean REM / UMC ? I'm sure you know, but others sending leads may not. The WW I Remington 1911 was built by Remington Arms and is quite rare in "unmolested" condition. If I remember right less than 25,000 were produced. It featured the most attractive slide markings of all the 1911's in my opinion and is quick to catch the eye. Many completely original examples have very rough looking frames with MAJOR machine marks. looking like damage at times. The Remington Rand Co manufactured business machines and in the madness of procurement was granted a contract to produce the 1911 A1 . I believe there are 3 different slide marking variations. Actually the most common WWII produced 1911 A1 encountered. GOOD LUCK with the search ! that's the fun part, sticker shock is another matter and getting worse every quarter. cheers mike todd
  20. JUST a word or two that may help. Marty Lamb (alltech) was a VERY CLOSE friend of mine when this rifle and many others was converted. He simply did NOT qualify as a machinist, he was/is a true artist that works with metal. In my 50+ years playing in this field absolutely NOBODY came close. I know , AK , simple metal removal, install req. parts, no big deal. but not in his case. finished examples that did not meet his strict standards, stayed home or went to associates to abuse. Of course I don't know this exact piece or its history but I do know how things played out. Its been more than 18 yrs since I have seen MARTY. When the law passed and the deadline drew near, Both our vaults were cleaned out along with ALL the local retailers of ANY variant /caliber to convert. previously we had experienced problems with the .223 in the AK , and being desperate decided to change them to 7.62 as long as the proper parts were available. we cleaned KENGS out at the time, and its been so long ago, I don't know how many were done that way, WOW makes me tired again just thinking about all the 22 hour days as the end drew near. wish I could find pics of the bench and all the G-3 lowers and semi packs waiting to be marked. To keep things clear, MARTY was ALLTECH, and I was just a friend and observed at best. My pre 86 conversions were all done by MARTY if machining was involved, simple part changing / marking on form 1's I could handle. BOTTOM LINE? If its ALLTECH and like it left the shop, it WILL be good to go. cheers mike
  21. NO question on the title 2 regs. they are very clear markings must match all the forms etc. I'm no lawyer but have been involved with firearms world wide prior to the gun control act being passed . Also been called to testify on both sides a few times , most all involved "altered firearms" some mechanical, some cosmetics . In NO case did the defendant prevail if it went to trial. While an individual can manufacture a firearm for their own use and leave it completely blank, altering one WITH MARKS in a way that effects the ability of law enforcement to identify or trace an example is regulated. At one time ATF published "guidelines" stating the procedure to be used when customizing firearms and even sporterizing military surplus arms. I can assure you the description of what was not allowed was much LESS than some of the things bring done today, how would a FFL holder log a firearm sold private 2 or 3 times then traded in and marked MP-5 , when in fact it is a HK94 or maybe a SP-89? how would it trace? before vollmer started messing around with the HK's, every form 4 I filled out (LOTS) had only the model, and serial number. brl length, o/al length and caliber were filled out N/A. I still have more than 40 done that way. all went first time . The consequences are yet to be seen of all the "re-stamps" and such . It will be interesting if it ever comes an issue, and I believe it will. cheers mike
  22. you gut shot your self with the western union! If funds still went in the mail that's a little help and I would report it but don't expect much response after you mention western union . Not sure why but when you use them , its a whole new world. when the scammers were hitting the collector auto parts hard, ALL the publications like HEMMINGS warned against using western union in any fashion. A usps money order was stolen from my mail and it was made good in less than 60 days with a simple form If she is in a small city , call the local sheriff and sic him on her. I had a like problem on gun broker with a dead beat that would not ship my goods, the sheriff was not too busy, took the time to listen and paid him a visit. My package was shipped the next day . where do these folks come from? good luck mike
  23. Am I wrong or are not these the same folks at the creek last year with all the fast fire AR triggers ? None were available , had an excellent approach and all the right words they just wanted your money until they were done. I spent quite some time at the table and after no sale, they sic'd the girl with the brit accent on me, as she was the "in house expert". They had several GIMMICK'S on the line at the time , AR receivers at home, several diff triggers and a LOT to say about post ban opportunity in the future.. IF SO BEWARE
  24. anyone catch the final hammer on the full size Group UZI with a .22 kit at the Julia auction on the 4th? it blew $20 K . the last couple years I hire a phone for the entire auction at these houses to keep up with the madness and gather a few deals. it seems like there are 2 different worlds out there at times. I forgot to mention the FAMAS at rock island , it was only $22K for a SEMI ?
  25. Leave it be ! it may be more original than you think and most buyers these days know how much uppers cost and will have their own options to deal with. anything you do at this point is simple math for value . you don't mention any barrel / upper marks, the bolt and carrier may be the only issue and was a repair.
