720312 Savage M1A1 Thompson We have the following transferable Savage manufactured M1A1 Thompson Submachine Gun, # 720312 available for sale. This is a very nice M1A1 Thompson! It was likely manufactured in very late 1943. The weapon has been through a U.S. Ordnance Rebuild Program, and features the later style, protected rear sight, and a fixed firing pin M1A1 bolt, and has the later buttstock with reinforcing crossbolt. It has been prick-punched on the receiver nose to indicate a barrel replacement. It is “U.S. Property” marked on the rear top of receiver behind the rear sight, marked in 2 lines, which is a Savage characteristic. The weapon has an Ordnance wheel partially stamped on the left side of the receiver, before the receiver nose, as well as an "FJA" inspector stamp, indicating it was originally inspected at Savage under the supervision of Army Inspector of Ordnance Frank J. Atwood of the Rochester Ordnance District during WWII. Such an inspector stamp is the easiest way to quickly identify a Savage M1 or M1A1, since they were not marked with “S” prefixes like the earlier M1928A1 models, and are extremely similar to the M1A1’s manufactured by Auto-Ordnance in Bridgeport, CT. It also features the Auto-Ordnance acceptance stamp of "GEG" for George E. Goll. The "GEG" stamp appears twice; once on the receiver nose, and once just forward of the magazine well. George E. Goll was the longest serving employee of Auto-Ordnance, beginning as General Thompson's chauffeur, and he ended up becoming the President of the Auto-Ordnance Division of Maguire Industries during WWII. The wood is very nice, and overall, it has honest wear for an 80-year old military Thompson submachine gun. It comes with one 30-round magazine.
